含める

ふくめる · fukumeru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to include

📦 含 = 今 (now) + 口 (mouth): whatever is in the mouth now is held in

含 originally meant to hold something in the mouth. 含む (fukumu) means to contain, and 含める (fukumeru) is the version where you actively put something in: to include it. The fuku- is the same in both words.

含 — mouth 口 + 今 (jīn, phonetic)
含 is a phono-semantic compound. The 口 (mouth) component gives the meaning — holding something in the mouth — while 今 supplies the sound. From the literal sense of keeping something inside the mouth, it extended to mean 'contain', 'include', or 'hold within'.
