向こう

むこう · mukou · JLPT N5 · noun

over there

👉 向こう = 向 (to face) + こう: the side you are facing, over there

From the verb 向く (muku, to face). 向こう is literally the facing side: whatever lies across from you, hence over there or beyond. Sound hook: mu-kou, move co-ordinates, the spot further on.

向 — roof 宀 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph of a house with a north-facing window, showing an opening in a wall under a roof. The early meaning was 'north window,' which extended to 'the direction something faces,' then broadly to 'toward' or 'direction.' The modern shape simplified the window into 口.
