向ける

むける · mukeru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to point

🧭 向 = direction (as in 方向); mukeru ≈ move-keru: move it to face something

向 means facing or direction, the same kanji as in 方向 (direction) and 向かう (to head for). As a transitive verb, 向ける is turning something else, like a camera, your face or attention, toward a target: カメラを向ける.

向 — roof 宀 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph of a house with a north-facing window, showing an opening in a wall under a roof. The early meaning was 'north window,' which extended to 'the direction something faces,' then broadly to 'toward' or 'direction.' The modern shape simplified the window into 口.
