名~

めい~ · mei~ · JLPT N2 · noun

famous ~

🏆 名 = name; 有名 (ゆうめい) = famous, literally 'having a name'

名 means both 'name' and 'fame'. 名前 (なまえ) is the everyday word for 'name', and 有名 is 'famous', so being famous is simply having a name that people know.

名 — evening 夕 + mouth 口
A compound ideograph: in the dark of evening (夕), one cannot recognize others by sight, so the mouth (口) calls out a name to identify oneself. The original sense of 'name' broadened to include reputation, fame, and a measure word for people.
