台所
だいどころ · daidokoro · JLPT N5 · noun
kitchen
🍳🔪 台所 = stand/counter (台) + place (所): the counter place
台 is a stand or work surface, 所 (ところ, voiced here to どころ) is place. The kitchen is literally the place of the counter. It comes from 台盤所, the room in Heian court houses where food trays on stands were prepared.
台 — mouth 口 + 厶 (private)
Originally depicted a raised platform or terrace, suggesting elevation and a place to stand. The character later extended to mean stage, podium, or station. In modern usage it also serves as the simplified form of 臺 (platform) and 颱 (typhoon), and names Taiwan (台灣).
所 — door 戶 (left) + axe 斤 (right)
Originally a sound: an axe (斤) chopping wood near a door (戶), with 戶 also hinting at the pronunciation. Over time it was borrowed to mean 'place' or 'location,' and later became a grammatical particle nominalizing verbs ('that which…'). The concrete 'chopping' sense faded entirely.
