おじ · oji · JLPT N2 · noun

uncle

叔父 — uncle

叔父 = 叔 (younger sibling) + 父 (father): a younger father, i.e. uncle

叔 marks the younger of two brothers, so 叔父 is one's father's younger brother. Its counterpart 伯父 is the father's elder brother.
