印鑑

いんかん · inkan · JLPT N1 · noun

cast

印 = mark, 鑑 = appraise/verify: an official mark that verifies who you are

Read inkan. Japanese people press a 印鑑 onto documents where Westerners would sign, so the 鑑 (check) part shows its job: it confirms identity.

印 — hand 爪 (claw) + kneeling person 卩
Originally a pictograph showing a hand pressing down on a kneeling figure, depicting the act of stamping or sealing. The meaning extended from 'to press a seal' to the seal itself, and then to 'print' or 'imprint' in modern usage.
