千

せん · sen · JLPT N5 · noun

thousand

sen: a thousand yen is sen en — the word hides in the price

千 is read sen, as in 千円 (sen en), the thousand-yen note. The character itself is 十 (ten) with one extra stroke slanting across the top: ten, marked up to a bigger round number.

千 — person 人 with horizontal stroke
Originally derived from the character 人 (person) with an added horizontal stroke, used as a numerical marker meaning 'thousand.' Some scholars link the stroke to a tally mark indicating a large count. Over time it became the standard numeral for 1000.
