区別

differentiation

🗂️ 区別 = divide into sections + separate: telling things apart

区 (ku) means a section or ward, as in Tokyo's 23 区; 別 (betsu) means separate or other, as in 別々 (separately). Put sections and separation together and you get distinction. Verbal hook: ku-BETS-u, you bet you can tell them apart.

区 — enclosure 匚 + 品 (items)
Originally a pictograph of items (品) hidden inside a container (匚), meaning to store or conceal. The sense extended to a bounded space, then to an administrative district or area. As a surname read Ōu, it preserves the older 'hidden/enclosed' nuance.
