効果

こうか · kouka · JLPT N3 · noun

consequence

🍎 効果 = effective + fruit (果): what an action bears is its effect

効 means to work or be effective, as in 効く (kiku, to take effect). 果 is fruit, and by extension a result, as in 結果 (kekka, outcome). Something that works and bears fruit has an effect. Sound hook: kouka sounds like Coca, as in the Coca-Cola effect.

果 — fruit shape 田-like top + tree 木
果 is a pictograph: early forms show a tree (木) with round fruit hanging on its branches, later stylized into the 田-like top. Its original meaning was 'fruit', which extended to 'result, outcome' — the fruit of an action — and to 'resolute, decisive'.
