🔗 助詞 = help + word: small words that help nouns show their role
助 (jo) means help, as in 助手 joshu, assistant. 詞 (shi) means word. Particles like は, が, を and に are helper words: they come after a noun and mark it as the topic, subject, object or place, which is why they are also called postpositions.
