別

べつ · betsu · JLPT N4 · noun

differentiation

別 = bone/separate (另) + knife (刂): cut apart, so distinct

The left side originally meant bones stripped from flesh, and the right side 刂 is a knife. Cutting things apart makes them separate, hence different. Sound hook: betsu is a bet on something else, not the same one.
