出る
でる · deru · JLPT N5 · verb-ichidan
to leave
🚪 deru sounds like dare: dare to leave, dare to appear
The kanji 出 means out. Both senses are one motion: going out of a place is leaving it, and coming out into view is appearing. Its partner 入る (hairu) means to enter, and the pair shows up together in 出入口, exit-and-entrance.
出 — foot 止 emerging from enclosure 凵
出 is a pictograph showing a foot or plant stepping out of a hollow or enclosure, depicting the act of going forth. The original sense of 'coming out' or 'emerging' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It now broadly means 'to exit, go out, or produce.'
