冷蔵庫

れいぞうこ · reizouko · JLPT N5 · noun

refrigerator

冷蔵庫 — refrigerator

🧊 冷蔵庫 = cold + store + storehouse: a cold storage warehouse

冷 (rei) means cold, 蔵 (zou) means to store or a storehouse, 庫 (ko) means a warehouse or depot. The same 庫 ends 車庫 (shako, garage) and 金庫 (kinko, safe), so 冷蔵庫 is literally the cold-storage depot in your kitchen.

冷 — ice radical 冫 + order 令
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 冫 (ice) supplies the meaning of coldness, while 令 (lìng, 'command/order') hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the chill of ice, 冷 broadened to mean cold in general, and figuratively cool, indifferent, or detached.
