冷やす
ひやす · hiyasu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to cool
🧊 冷 = cold + やす = make it so: hiyasu makes something cold, like hiyayakko
冷 means cold, as in 冷蔵庫 (reizōko, fridge). The same hiya- root is in 冷奴 (hiyayakko, chilled tofu) and お冷 (ohiya, a glass of cold water). Verbs ending in -asu often mean making something happen, so hiyasu is to cool something. Compare 冷える (hieru), to get cold.
冷 — ice radical 冫 + order 令
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 冫 (ice) supplies the meaning of coldness, while 令 (lìng, 'command/order') hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the chill of ice, 冷 broadened to mean cold in general, and figuratively cool, indifferent, or detached.
