冷める
さめる · sameru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan
to become cool
🍵 sameru: the SAME tea, but now it has gone cold
冷 is the kanji for cold (also in 冷たい), so 冷める = to become cool. It covers feelings too: excitement, love or a drug's effect can wear off, cooling down the same way hot tea does when left alone.
冷 — ice radical 冫 + order 令
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 冫 (ice) supplies the meaning of coldness, while 令 (lìng, 'command/order') hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the chill of ice, 冷 broadened to mean cold in general, and figuratively cool, indifferent, or detached.
