冷ます
さます · samasu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to cool
🍵🧊 samasu: Sam asks you to let the soup cool before sipping
冷 is the cold kanji (as in 冷たい), and ます here is part of the verb stem, not the polite ending. Transitive: you cool something (お茶を冷ます). Its intransitive partner is 冷める (さめる), to get cold on its own.
冷 — ice radical 冫 + order 令
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 冫 (ice) supplies the meaning of coldness, while 令 (lìng, 'command/order') hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the chill of ice, 冷 broadened to mean cold in general, and figuratively cool, indifferent, or detached.
