冷える

ひえる · hieru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to grow cold

🧊 hieru sounds like he-air-oo: he feels the air and cools down

冷 is the cold kanji: the ice radical 冫 on the left plus 令. The same kanji gives 冷たい (tsumetai, cold to the touch). 冷える is intransitive — something grows cold by itself; 冷やす (hiyasu) is the transitive partner, to chill something.

冷 — ice radical 冫 + order 令
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 冫 (ice) supplies the meaning of coldness, while 令 (lìng, 'command/order') hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the chill of ice, 冷 broadened to mean cold in general, and figuratively cool, indifferent, or detached.
