写る

うつる · utsuru · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to be photographed

📷 写 = copy: 写る is when you get copied onto film, as in 写真 shashin, photo

写 means copy or transcribe. 写真 (photo) is literally a copy of the truth. 写る shares its sound with 移る (to move across), since the image moves across onto the film or screen. The verb is intransitive: you appear in the photo, while 写す means to take it.

写 — 宀 roof + 与 (phonetic, simplified from 寫)
Originally 寫 depicted placing something under a roof (宀), extended to mean 'to set down' and then 'to write/copy'. The simplified form 写 keeps the roof but replaces the complex inner element with 与, which also hints at the sound. Today it broadly means 'to write' or 'to depict'.
