再び
ふたたび · futatabi · JLPT N3 · adverb
again
futa (two, as in futatsu) + tabi (times, as in 度) = a second time
Futatabi literally means two times: futa is the old root for two (futatsu, futari) and tabi means occasion, as in kono tabi. The kanji 再 is the re- in 再会 (saikai, meeting again).
再 — top 一 + 冂 frame + 土-like inner strokes
再 originally depicted a stack of fish or piled objects, suggesting accumulation or repetition. Over time it came to mean 'again' or 'once more,' emphasizing a second occurrence of an action. The modern form is stylized and no longer clearly pictographic.
