具合

ぐあい · guai · JLPT N4 · noun

health

🩺 具合 = tool/equip (具) + fit (合): how well things fit together

具 means equipment or to be furnished; 合 means to fit or match. How well the parts fit is the condition of a thing, or of your body. 具合が悪い = the fit is bad, so you feel unwell or something is not working right.

合 — 乛 (lid/roof) + 口 (mouth)
Originally a pictograph of a lidded vessel — a cover (亼) closing over an opening (口) — giving the core sense of 'come together, join, fit.' From 'fit/match' it extended to 'combine, unite, agree' and to measure-word uses. The reading hé reflects this 'joining' meaning.
