全身
ぜんしん · zenshin · JLPT N3 · noun
body
🧍 全身 = whole + body: zen means all, as in zenbu (everything)
全 (zen) means whole or complete, the same zen as in 全部 zenbu, everything. 身 (shin) means body, as in 身長 shinchō, body height. Put together, the whole body; on a photo, a full-length shot.
全 — enter 入 on top + jade 玉
Originally written as 入 (enter) over 玉 (jade), depicting a complete, unflawed piece of jade kept in storage. From this image of a perfect jade came the meanings 'whole,' 'complete,' and 'entire.' The top component is sometimes written as 人.
身 — pictograph of a pregnant body
身 is a pictograph originally depicting a person with a swollen belly, representing a pregnant woman in profile. Over time the meaning broadened from 'pregnancy' or 'torso' to refer to the body in general, and by extension oneself or one's person.
