全体
ぜんたい · zentai · JLPT N3 · noun
whole
全体 = all (全) + body (体): all of the body, the whole thing
全 (zen) means all or complete, as in 全部 (all of it); 体 (tai) means body, as in 体重 (body weight). The whole body of something is its entirety. As an adverb, as in 一体全体, it means what on earth.
全 — enter 入 on top + jade 玉
Originally written as 入 (enter) over 玉 (jade), depicting a complete, unflawed piece of jade kept in storage. From this image of a perfect jade came the meanings 'whole,' 'complete,' and 'entire.' The top component is sometimes written as 人.
