全

ぜん · zen · JLPT N3 · prefix

all

💎 Sounds like zen, the state of being whole. 全部 (zenbu) = all of it

The top part is a cover and the bottom 王 comes from 玉, jade. Jade kept under a cover stays whole and unbroken. You can hear it in 全部 zenbu (everything), 完全 kanzen (complete) and 安全 anzen (safe, meaning sound and whole).

全 — enter 入 on top + jade 玉
Originally written as 入 (enter) over 玉 (jade), depicting a complete, unflawed piece of jade kept in storage. From this image of a perfect jade came the meanings 'whole,' 'complete,' and 'entire.' The top component is sometimes written as 人.
