入れ物

いれもの · iremono · JLPT N2 · noun

container

📦 入れ物 = put-in (入れる ireru) + thing (物 mono): a thing you put stuff in

入れる (ireru) means to put in or insert, and 物 (mono) means thing or object. Join them and you get iremono, literally a put-in thing, which is any container, case or vessel.

入 — single pictograph, two slanting strokes
入 is a pictograph showing an arrowhead or pointed entrance, with two strokes converging downward to suggest something going inward. The original sense was 'to enter,' and it still carries that meaning today. It contrasts visually with 人 (person), where the strokes cross differently at the top.
