児童

じどう · jidou · JLPT N3 · noun

children

🧒🎒 児童 = child (児) + young child (童): two child kanji make children

Both kanji mean child: 児 (ji) as in 幼児 infant, 童 (dou) as in 童話 children's story. Doubled up, they form the formal word for children, used in schools and law, e.g. 児童館 children's centre. Sound hook: the kids ride the judo (jidou) bus.
