元気
げんき · genki · JLPT N5 · na-adj
energetic
💪🔋 元気 = origin (元) + spirit/energy (気): your original energy, intact
元 means origin or source, 気 is the vital energy also found in 天気 (weather) and 気持ち (feeling). Having your source energy intact means being healthy and lively. Hence the greeting お元気ですか: is your energy well?
元 — 二 (two) + 兒 variant 儿 (legs/person)
元 originally depicted a person with the head emphasized on top, meaning 'head' or 'origin'. From this came the extended senses of 'first', 'beginning', and 'primary'. It was later borrowed as the name of the Yuan dynasty and the modern Chinese currency unit.
