修飾

しゅうしょく · shuushoku · JLPT N3 · noun

modification

🎀 修 polish + 飾 decorate (as in 飾る kazaru) = dress something up

In grammar, a modifier dresses up a word: in 赤い花, 赤い decorates 花. The same idea gives 修飾語 (shuushokugo), modifier, and 修飾する, to modify or ornament. Don't confuse it with 就職 (shuushoku), getting a job, which sounds the same.

修 — 亻 person + 攸 (phonetic) + 彡 hair/decoration
修 combines 攸 (a phonetic component originally showing a person being washed) with 彡, which depicts flowing hair or ornamental strokes. The 彡 element suggests grooming, polishing, or adorning, giving 修 its core meaning of cultivating, repairing, or refining oneself or things.
