修正
しゅうせい · shuusei · JLPT N3 · noun
correction
🔧 修正 = repair (修) + correct (正): fix it until it is right
修 means to mend or repair, as in 修理 (shuuri, repair). 正 means correct or proper, as in 正しい (tadashii). Together: mending something back to correct, hence an amendment or correction. Shuusei: the shuu of repair plus the sei of correct.
修 — 亻 person + 攸 (phonetic) + 彡 hair/decoration
修 combines 攸 (a phonetic component originally showing a person being washed) with 彡, which depicts flowing hair or ornamental strokes. The 彡 element suggests grooming, polishing, or adorning, giving 修 its core meaning of cultivating, repairing, or refining oneself or things.
正 — one 一 + stop 止
Originally an ideograph showing a foot (止) advancing toward a target line (一), meaning 'to march straight toward' a city or goal. From this came the senses 'upright,' 'correct,' and 'proper.' The military sense survives in 征 (to campaign), which took over the original 'march' meaning.
