保障

ほしょう · hoshou · JLPT N3 · noun

guarantee

🛡️ 保 protect + 障 barrier = a protective barrier: security, guarantee

障 is the barrier in 障害 (obstacle), and 保 means keep or protect. 保障 means guarding against harm, as in 安全保障 (national security). Don't confuse it with 保証, also read hoshou, which is the warranty on a product.

保 — person 亻 + 呆 (child/protect phonetic)
Originally an ideograph showing an adult carrying a child on the back, meaning to protect or shield. The right side 呆 evolved from a depiction of a swaddled infant. Over time the meaning broadened from 'protect a child' to 'preserve, guarantee, keep safe.'
