価格

かかく · kakaku · JLPT N3 · noun

monetary value

🏷️💴 価格 = value 価 + standard/rank 格: the rank a thing's value gets

価 (also in 評価, evaluation) means value or worth, and 格 means level or standing (as in 性格, character). Together they give a thing's worth set at a fixed level: its price. Sound hook: ka-ka-ku, like a cashier calling out three beeps at the till.

格 — wood 木 + 各 (each, phonetic)
格 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 木 (wood) gives the meaning, originally referring to a wooden frame, lattice, or crossbar, while 各 supplies the sound. From 'frame/grid' the meaning extended to 'pattern, standard, style' and the modern senses of 'square (in a grid)' and 'character/disposition'.
