供 means to offer or provide, as in 提供 (teikyou, to provide). 給 means to give or allot, as in 給料 (kyuuryou, salary). Offering plus giving out makes supply, the opposite of 需要 (juyou, demand).

A semantic-phonetic compound: 亻 (person) gives the meaning of human action while 共 (together, gōng) supplies the sound. Originally meaning to present or offer jointly, it extended to 'supply, provide.' A second reading gòng means to make an offering or confess.
