作文

さくぶん · sakubun · JLPT N5 · noun

composition

📝 作文 = make (作) + writing (文): a piece of writing you make

作 (saku) means to make or produce, as in 作品 (work) and 作家 (author). 文 (bun) means text or sentence, as in 文章 and 文学. Put together, sakubun is literally made-writing: the essay or composition you produce at school.

作 — person radical 亻 + 乍
作 combines the person radical 亻 with 乍, which originally depicted a sudden action or making something. The character means 'to do, make, or create,' with 亻 indicating human activity and 乍 supplying the sound. Over time it broadened to cover works, deeds, and acting as something.

文 — pictograph of crossed lines on a chest
文 originally depicted a person with patterns or tattoos drawn on the chest, shown as crossed or interwoven lines. From this image of decorative markings, it came to mean 'pattern,' then 'writing,' 'script,' and 'literature' or 'culture.' The modern senses all trace back to the idea of meaningful marks.
