余裕
よゆう · yoyuu · JLPT N3 · noun
excess
余 (left over) + 裕 (plenty): yoyuu, yo, you have room to spare
余 means surplus or remainder, and 裕 means abundance, as in 富裕 (wealth). Together they mean having more than you need: spare time, money or room. It also means composure, as in 余裕がある (to have leeway, to be unhurried).
余 — roof 亼 + wooden post/pillar
Originally a pictograph of a simple thatched shelter or hut supported by a central post, 余 meant 'lodging' or 'temporary dwelling.' It was later borrowed phonetically to write the first-person pronoun 'I/me,' which became its dominant meaning. The 'surplus/remainder' sense developed through its use as a loan for 餘.
