体重
たいじゅう · taijuu · JLPT N3 · noun
weight
⚖️ 体重 = body + heavy: how heavy your body is
体 (tai) means body and 重 (juu) means heavy or weight, as in 重い (omoi, heavy). Put together, body-heaviness is your body weight. You can hear the same 重 in 体重計 (taijuukei), the bathroom scale.
重 — person 人 + east 東 (phonetic)
Originally depicted a person carrying a heavy bundle on their back, suggesting weight and burden. The 東-like element served as a phonetic component. Over time the character split into two readings: zhòng meaning 'heavy' and chóng meaning 'repeat/again'.
