住民

じゅうみん · juumin · JLPT N3 · noun

inhabitant

住民 — inhabitant

🏠 住民 = dwell (住) + people (民): the people who live there

住 (juu) is the dwell of 住所 (address) and 住む (to live). 民 (min) is the people of 国民 (citizens) and 市民 (city residents). Dwell + people = residents; a 住民票 is your resident record.

住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
