住所
じゅうしょ · juusho · JLPT N4 · noun
address
🏠 住所 = live (住) + place (所): the place where you live
住 (juu) is the same character as in 住む, to live or reside. 所 (sho) means place, as in 場所 (basho). Put together: the place you reside, which is exactly what you write on a form as your address.
住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
所 — door 戶 (left) + axe 斤 (right)
Originally a sound: an axe (斤) chopping wood near a door (戶), with 戶 also hinting at the pronunciation. Over time it was borrowed to mean 'place' or 'location,' and later became a grammatical particle nominalizing verbs ('that which…'). The concrete 'chopping' sense faded entirely.
