housing

住宅 — housing

🏠 住宅 = dwell (住) + home (宅): a home you dwell in, i.e. housing

住 is the kanji in 住む (sumu, to live somewhere) and 宅 is the one in お宅 (otaku, your home) and 自宅 (jitaku, own home). Both parts mean living at home, so the pair is the formal word for a residence, as in 住宅地 (residential area).

住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
