住む
すむ · sumu · JLPT N5 · verb-godan
to live in
🏠 住 = person 亻 + master 主: a person is master of where they live
The kanji 住 joins 亻 (person) with 主 (master, owner). Where you reside is where you are the master of the house. Sound hook: sumu is like 'sue-moo' — you settle in and stay, as in 住所 (jūsho, address).
住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
