住

じゅう · juu · JLPT N3 · noun

dwelling

🏠 住 = person 亻 + master 主: where a person is master is where they live

The left side 亻 is the person radical, and 主 means master or owner. A person who is master of a place lives there. You'll see it in 住所 (じゅうしょ, address) and 住む (すむ, to live).

住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
