会議室
かいぎしつ · kaigishitsu · JLPT N4 · noun
conference room
🏢 会議室 = meet + discuss + room (kai-gi-shitsu)
会議 (kaigi) means meeting: 会 is to meet, 議 is to discuss. 室 (shitsu) is room, the same ending as in 教室 (kyoushitsu, classroom) and 寝室 (shinshitsu, bedroom). So it reads literally as meeting-discussion room.
会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
室 — roof 宀 + arrive 至
A semantic compound: 宀 (roof/house) over 至 (to arrive). The image is a place one arrives at and stays in — an inner room. From 'inner chamber' the meaning broadened to 'room' generally, and by extension to specialized rooms like an office or laboratory.
