会場

かいじょう · kaijou · JLPT N4 · noun

venue

🏟️ 会場 = meet (会) + place (場): the place where people meet

会 (kai) means meeting, as in 会議 (kaigi, conference) and 会社 (kaisha, company). 場 (jou) means place, as in 工場 (koujou, factory = craft + place). So kaijou is literally the meeting-place: the venue for an event.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
