orthography

📖 仮名 = kana (provisional script) + 遣い = usage, so 仮名遣い = the rules for using kana

Historical kana spelling rules that set how particles and long vowels are written, such as は for the topic particle and おう for long o. Modern spelling is kana-based, but these rules are still taught.

名 — evening 夕 + mouth 口
A compound ideograph: in the dark of evening (夕), one cannot recognize others by sight, so the mouth (口) calls out a name to identify oneself. The original sense of 'name' broadened to include reputation, fame, and a measure word for people.
