代わり

かわり · kawari · JLPT N4 · noun

substitute

🔄 代わり = 代 (stand in for) + わり, noun form of 代わる, to take the place of

From the verb 代わる (kawaru), to take someone's place; the -i ending turns it into a noun. 代 also appears in 代表 (representative) and 時代 (era, one generation replacing another). Sound hook: a car-worry (ka-wa-ri) means you need a replacement car.

代 — person radical 亻 + 弋 (stake/dart, phonetic)
代 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 亻 (person) gives the meaning and 弋 supplies the sound. The original sense was one person taking the place of another, which broadened to 'substitute,' 'replace,' and then 'generation' or 'era' — successive groups of people replacing the previous.
