他人

たにん · tanin · JLPT N3 · noun

person

🚶 他人 = other + person: someone who isn't part of your circle

他 means other and 人 means person, so 他人 is literally an other person. It is used for someone with no connection to you, as in 赤の他人, a complete stranger.

他 — person radical 亻 + 也
Originally written 它, depicting a snake, and used as a general third-person pronoun. The person radical 亻 was later added to specify a human referent, while 也 serves as the phonetic component giving the sound tā.

人 — pictograph of a standing person
人 is a pictograph showing a person viewed from the side, with two strokes representing the legs and torso of a standing human. In oracle bone script it clearly depicted a figure leaning slightly forward. The meaning has remained 'person' or 'human' throughout its history.
