仕上がる

しあがる · shiagaru · JLPT N2 · noun

to be finished

🏁 仕 (do/work) + 上がる (rise up to the top) = work that has risen all the way to the top: done

上がる means to rise or go up, and it also means to reach a finish point. 仕上がる combines 仕 (doing work) with that sense of rising to the end, so the work is complete.

上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
