仏 = 亻 person + ム: short Japanese form of 佛, the person who woke up
仏 is the Japanese shortened form of 佛 and keeps the person radical 亻 on the left. The reading ほとけ probably comes from 浮屠 (futo), an old transcription of Buddha, with け added on the end. Its on-reading is ぶつ, as in 仏教 (Buddhism).
