人種
じんしゅ · jinshu · JLPT N3 · noun
race
人種 = person (人) + seed/kind (種): the kinds of people
人 (jin) means person; 種 (shu) means seed, and by extension a kind or species, as in 種類 (shurui, type). So jinshu is literally person-kind: a category of humankind, i.e. race.
人 — pictograph of a standing person
人 is a pictograph showing a person viewed from the side, with two strokes representing the legs and torso of a standing human. In oracle bone script it clearly depicted a figure leaning slightly forward. The meaning has remained 'person' or 'human' throughout its history.
