二人

ふたり · futari · JLPT N5 · noun

people

👫 二人 = two + person; futa (two) + ri (people counter)

Native Japanese counting: futa is the old word for two (as in futatsu), and -ri counts people. Same pattern as hitori (one person). From three people on, the reading switches to Chinese-style: sannin, yonin.

二 — two horizontal strokes 一 + 一
二 is an indicative character showing the number two with two simple horizontal lines, parallel to 一 (one) and 三 (three). The form has been stable since oracle bone script. It directly represents the concept of 'two' rather than depicting any physical object.

人 — pictograph of a standing person
人 is a pictograph showing a person viewed from the side, with two strokes representing the legs and torso of a standing human. In oracle bone script it clearly depicted a figure leaning slightly forward. The meaning has remained 'person' or 'human' throughout its history.
