📖 予習 = beforehand (予) + practice (習): study the lesson before class
予 means in advance, as in 予約 (reservation) and 予定 (plan). 習 means to learn or practice, as in 練習 (practice). Its partner word is 復習 (fukushuu), review after class: 予 goes before the lesson, 復 comes back to it afterwards.
